Why I Left Fast Fashion Behind | Sustainable BowTies & Ethical Neck Ties by Arsenic and Old Lace

Let’s talk about fast fashion—and why I wanted no part of it when I launched Arsenic and Old Lace.

Fast fashion may offer cheap neck ties and flashy seasonal bowties, but beneath the surface lies a much uglier truth: pollution, exploitation, and an endless cycle of waste. I started this brand to do things differently—to create ethical bowties and neck ties that are as good for the planet as they are for your wardrobe.

Here’s why our sustainable bowties and handmade neck ties are a conscious alternative to mass-produced accessories—and why I believe slow fashion is the future of menswear.

The Fast Fashion Problem (and Why It Affects You)

It’s not just about poor-quality neck ties that fall apart after one wear. Fast fashion has a serious environmental and ethical cost:

  • Over 92 million tonnes of textile waste ends up in landfill each year.

  • The fashion industry emits about 10% of all global CO₂ emissions—more than aviation and shipping combined.

  • Many garment workers earn below living wages, working long hours in unsafe conditions.

  • A single cotton shirt takes 2,700 litres of water to produce.

So when a bowtie costs less than a cup of coffee, someone—or something—is paying the price.

How Our Sustainable BowTies and Neck Ties Are Different

At Arsenic and Old Lace, every decision we make is rooted in quality, sustainability, and style that lasts. Here’s what sets us apart:

1. Made-to-Order Ties: Zero Waste, All Charm

Unlike fast fashion brands that mass-produce neck ties and bowties by the thousands, we make each piece only when you place your order. This means no overproduction, no unsold stock, and no wasteful clearance sales. Just slow fashion accessories made with love and intention.

2. Vintage-Inspired, Eco-Conscious Fabric Choices

We reclaim vintage fabrics whenever possible and source high-quality, vintage-style textiles when not. This reduces the demand for virgin materials and keeps textile waste out of landfills—all while giving you a unique, elegant piece that no one else has.

3. Plastic-Free, Planet-Friendly Packaging

Every ethical bowtie and neck tie is delivered in recycled or compostable packaging. No plastic. No landfill guilt. Just beautifully wrapped accessories that reflect our values.

4. Timeless Style That Outlasts Trends

Our bowties and neck ties are designed to be seasonless. You won't find trend-chasing or disposable looks here. We focus on classic, enduring silhouettes and elegant details—so your tie still looks good ten years from now.

5. Proudly Made in Britain

We believe in supporting local artisans. All of our bowties and neck ties are handcrafted right here in the UK, ensuring quality, ethical labour practices, and a smaller carbon footprint.

Better Way to Dress Up

I didn’t start Arsenic and Old Lace to follow trends—I started it to create something meaningful. A sustainable fashion brand built on craft, character, and care. When you wear one of our bowties or neck ties, you’re not just making a fashion choice—you’re making a statement about who you are and what you stand for.

So, if you’re ready to leave disposable fashion behind and invest in handmade bowties and timeless neck ties you’ll treasure for years, we’d love to welcome you.

We ship worldwide, plastic-free, and always made to order.

With love,

Emma
